About Us

Southern Comfort Animal Rescue, Inc. is 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that rescues and rehomes abused, unwanted and abandoned companion animals.

Southern Comfort was founded in 2001 in Savannah, Georgia, to provide shelter and find temporary foster or permanent homes for pets left behind when troops in nearby Ft. Stewart's 3rd Infantry Division shipped out to Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2006, the organization moved to Glenwood, Georgia. Southern Comfort fills a critical need in Wheeler County.  The county is one of the most impoverished counties in the nation and lacks any animal control or shelters for unwanted animals.  As a result, there are many stray dogs and puppies of abandoned on a daily basis.

Upon intake, all animals are quarantined for 2 weeks.  All animals are examined, vaccinated, spayed or neutered if older than 5 months and receive any and all medical treatment before being placed in carefully screened forever homes.

Once a month, our Freedom Ride bus leaves Gleanwood, GA and heads to Lawrence, NJ to hold an Adoption Event for pre-approved applicants.  Nothing is more heartworming than watching our rescue dogs go to their forever homes!

Southern Comfort is a "no-kill" rescue and only euthanizes in cases of irremediable suffering or vicious and dangerous animals.

We also work to raise public awareness of the plight of homeless animals and promote the benefits of spaying/neutering and heartworm preventatives through community outreach and education.
