Happy Tail: Cliff
A 'Big Red Dog' Finds a Home

cliffWhen Cliff, a 1-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback / Lab mix was found wandering around some dumpsters in Glenwood in April 2009, he was underweight, but happy.

Naming him after "Clifford, the Big Red Dog," Scott Bennett brought him to Southern Comfort Animal Rescue.

Cliff was friendly with all the dogs at the rescue. He had a funny way of "smiling," curling his upper lip above his teeth when he was happy. He even befriended a dog that none of the other canines at the rescue seemed to care for.

Cliff had been at the rescue for eight months when Chuck Massey saw his picture on petfinder.com and called to ask about him. He and his wife Nancy were looking for a sweet, loyal watchdog. Cliff seemed to fit the bill, so after talking with Bennett at length about the dog, the couple drove six hours from their home in Florida to meet and adopt him.

Chuck said it was the perfect decision for their family. Cliff now enjoys an active lifestyle with his new family and has travelled to six different states.

"He loves camping, hiking and running alongside the bike," Chuck said. "He has watched shuttle launches from our backyard, and he has been to the highest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway."

Now 2 ½ and still a social dog, Cliff loves to spend time at the dog park and playing with his "nephew," Duncan, a 1-year-old dachshund/schnauzer mix, rescued by Chuck's daughter Lesley.

"I don't think any of us could be happier,” Chuck said. “How does the saying go... 'Who rescued who'?"
