Our Foster Program
At Southern Comfort Animal Rescue we are determined to continue improving our facility so we may one day be able to house even more desperate dogs in need. It's a slow but steady process. This is just one reason why Foster Homes are extremely important for us to be able to continue our work.
Why foster a dog?
By fostering a dog you are saving their lives. Without a safe place for the dogs to go we cannot save anymore.
Fostering a dog is work. Rewarding work. To know that you have made a difference by not only saving a life, but also by helping that dog transition to the perfect forever home is immeasurable. Your fostering helps us place these dogs with the perfect families.
Most of the dogs come from poor, rural areas of Georgia. Living as yard dogs with no shelter. Some unwanted litters just dumped over our fences. Many are strays picked up on the side of the road in need of serious veterinary care. The stories go on and on.
Their stories are usually mysteries, but their love always shines through. All they need is understanding, patience and a safe place to start finding their true selves. A good foster home can provide just that.
What Does Fostering Involve?
Fostering a dog means bringing a dog into your home and caring for them as if they were one of your own with love, patience and most of all understanding. Taking care of all the basic needs of feeding them, making sure they have clean fresh water, shelter, and exercise. As a foster it's invaluable for us as a rescue to count on you in helping us place them in the best forever home. At that point you will know the dog better than anyone.
We do many different Foster Programs. These will be explained to you so you may make the best decision for what is best for you and your family. A foster placement can last anywhere from a weekend to a couple of weeks to several months.
We will provide all food, leashes, collars, and crates. Help and advice is always available. We have some wonderful volunteers/foster families within the PA/NJ area that are always there to lend a helping hand.
Choosing the right foster dog for you and your family.
We will work closely with you in choosing the appropriate foster for you and your family. You will receive write-ups and photos of the dogs prior to arrival. There are times where you would be able to meet the dogs at our events.
If you have a dog in your home already, it's a good idea to do a "meet and greet" when possible. Bring your dog to meet the potential foster. A foster dog that is younger and of the opposite gender than yours tends to work best. Of course, you know your dog best and you probably already have a good idea of whom he or she is most likely to get along best with in your home.
There is so much neglect down south that there are uncountable numbers of what we call "Special Need Pups". Dogs that arrive at our rescue sick, malnourished, heart worm positive, fearful of humans. The list goes on and on. They are always in need of exceptionally caring fosters. If you have the patience and skill to open your home to such a dog, you're doing a rare service.
