This dapper terrier-mix possesses a great balance of energy and calmness. He loves to play and run and also cuddle on the couch. With new people, he is a bit shy so he won't be that dog jumping on everyone. As you can see in videos and photos, he is very affectionate. His favorite place to sleep is in bed under the covers! And Bert is super smart, fully house-trained, knows fetch, sit and down and even rings a bell to go out. Bert has been living with 2 cats and has been cat-friendly. He loves toys and will pull every single toy out of the basket to test them. He loves sitting on the couch and watching TV with his people!

Bert took the Freedom Ride to NJ in October and went into foster with his brother. His foster parents trained both pups. Bert was initially adopted by an older couple and although they fell in love with him, they decided that they were not ready for a young pup. Bert will do best in a home that welcomes a pup who loves toys, wants to sit on the couch and enjoys playing and walking together. He would  be great as a second dog  (meet and greet required) but also would be good as an only dog in a home where people have time to spend with him.  He is initially hesitant with men so patience and understanding is a must. For this reason, not a good match for small children. He has been good with cats.

Bert has a very special rescue story. Down in Georgia, Bert's mom is a stray that has been "at large" for over two years, according to the people who see her on a daily basis. Attempts at catching the mom have only left rescuers, including SoCo Rescue's Scott Bennett. frustrated. While Bert's brother, Timber, had been caught in July, Bert and his mom were still living under a mobile home, surviving from whatever they could find to eat and playing a very dangerous game with passing motorist.

Towards the end of August, the SoCo Rescue team spent a day giving chase to a very elusive dog and her pup who had obviously been taught well by his mom. Bert managed to dodge, slip away or just flat out outrun us for most of the day, but eventually made a bad decision when he darted into a culvert pipe that ran under a driveway. With Bert sitting midway in the pipe and refusing to move, Cindy wasted no time crawling into the pipe and traveling belly-first through the  25' pipe, forcing Bert to exit right into an awaiting crate.

For the first week or so, Bert remained completed terrified of us. He'd either run away or cower down whenever we entered his kennel space. While he slowly made progress and allow us to touch him and even pick him up.  But when we reunited him with his brother Timber, Bert became a different pup! He started to run, jump and play, the stressed, frightened look on his face turned to smiles and excitement. From that point on, Bert has continued to make progress interacting with people but still remains hesitant. He has never attempted to bite nor has he shown any signs of aggression.

Bert has received all three of his first year "puppy" vaccines, his rabies vaccination, been de-wormed and treated against parasites on a regular basis. In August, an exam did detect traces of hookworms but he was treated and is now be clear of them. He is scheduled for neutering prior to adoption.
