Yuri's former owner originally surrendered his two sister, Yuba and Yumi, to us because he couldn't afford their needed vet care. At that time, we were unaware that Yuri existed much less that he kept him. Once Scott Bennett found out about Yuri, he kept a dialogue going with the young man to try an ensure that Yuri received proper care. It was through those conversations that Scott learned the young man was trying to transform Yuri into the stereotypical "Pit" Bulldog and possibly using him for improper things. The young man asked Scott questions such as how could he make his dog muscular, mean and very strong. While Yuri does have some Bulldog in his mix, he would never be able to have the characteristics of a "Pit" Bulldog that's typically used for fighting. Add in the fact that Yuri is a sweet and gentle dog who would not have lasted very long in any type of dog fight, especially against a trained killer that's used in dog fighting. Scott was able to convince Yuri's owner of this but then had to overcome another obstacle: the man wanted to sell Yuri to the highest bidder, at one point demanding $200-$600 for Yuri. While this angered Scott, he somehow was able to convince the man to let him have Yuri for $70. While Scott has never paid for a rescue dog and doesn't condone doing so, he just couldn't let Yuri fall victim to whatever fate awaited him if he was sold to the highest bidder. 

 

Yuri has definitely proven himself to be worth the effort that it took to save him. Just looking into his eyes can reveal that this fellow has so much love to give, so much desire to be someone's special friend for life. While he is a bit goofy and a little bit of a clutz, Yuri will grow into being a very special dog for the right family. Scott fully expects that there are great things in store for Yuri, that he'll end up doing something wonderful in his life, even if it's just providing love and companionship to someone who really needs it. 

 

While at SoCo Rescue, Yuri received an update on his annual vaccinations, was de-wormed and treated for parasites, including tapeworms which were discovered during his fecal/parasite screening. Yuri's also been neutered and started on his monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventatives.
