Description:

ADOPTION PENDING!

Sissy is a beautiful, friendly, docile shepherd mix.  Over the past weeks while living in a home she has been a wonderful companion. She's a very calm, laidback dog who enjoys just relaxing on her dog bed. She also enjoys going on walks, being gentle on her leash at most times, and responding very well to corrective measures when she does pull a bit harder on the leash. She's shown no reaction to the others dogs that she's encountered and has even been very peaceful when she's encountered our house cat, even touching noses with the cat and then simply walking away. From every indication we've received, Sissy should do very well in a home with other older, calm dogs and even cats that are dog friendly.  She been through a lot these past months and is anxious to be alone.  Her foster family is working this as well as consistent house training.  She's be perfect for someone looking for a calm and easy dog with patience and a generous heart.

We became aware of Sissy and her need for rescue help after a young lady directed us to a posting on a social media page. According to what we read, Sissy's former owners had stated that she needed a new home by that evening (a Saturday night) or she would "...be euthanized". There was no mention of why or what had landed Sissy on a countdown for her life but it did mention that she was pregnant. We made contact with Sissy's owner and were told the reason for her deadline was because she would run in the neighbor's yard causing the neighbor to threaten to shoot Sissy if she was not removed from the property. The former owners also stated that they had found Sissy as a stray a few months earlier and provided her with a place to stay and even produced vet records confirming the care that they had provided her. We made arraignments for Sissy to be brought to us the next day.

Our initial examination of Sissy revealed that she was much older than a "couple of years" ; in fact, our vet agreed that she's most likely 7 years old. Her breathing was somewhat labored and Sissy seemed really tired. Our vet not only confirmed her pregnancy, he also detected a heavy presence of heartworms and believed that Sissy had been infected with them for quite some time. Our vet felt that with her compromised health, to allow Sissy to follow through with her pregnancy would only put her life and the lives of her unborn puppies at great risk. Based on our vet's findings, we sadly made the decision to abort Sissy's pregnancy. In addition, our vet doesn't think Sissy would be a candidate for the "fast kill" method of treating her heartworms as the procedure is very hard on even a younger, healthier dog and he recommended treating Sissy using the "slow kill" method, which we'll be happy to explain to any potential adopters.

Sissy has now been spayed, received an update on her annual vaccinations, de-wormings and started back on her monthly preventatives. She's also displayed good house training skills, with only a couple of accidents overnight. Potential adopters should understand that Sissy's life would be put at risk if she was subjected to the "fast kill" method and she should not, under any circumstances, be subjected to the harsh method of treating her heartworms. Sissy simply needs a home where she can peacefully live out whatever time she has left, be that a few years or less, and get the love that she so deserves.

Is your heart big enough to give Sissy a chance at a wonderful "retirement" home, even knowing that she isn't in the best of health but so deserving of  receiving all the love she can? If so, then please submit an application at socorescue.com
